===== Deferred Compilation as the Basis for a Linux Distribution ===== * **Speaker**: prescott2m * **Room**: 340 * **Time**: Saturday, [[https://pretalx.seagl.org/2026/talk/L9SWK7.ics|Oct 24th 10:00 – 10:20]] * **Format**: Talk (20 minutes) * **Difficulty**: Advanced! * **Track**: Technical * **Additional Tags**: Hardcore, Kernel, Programmer * **Experience**: Open-source developer specializing in lightweight and minimalist software, with experience in Linux distribution creation, kernel work, and C programming. ==== Description: ==== Most Linux distributions ship precompiled software or compile at install time, but ccix takes a different approach. This session explains the architecture: ccix, an experimental distribution that utilizes deferred compilation—a technique where applications are compiled only when they are invoked. By using a custom deferred compiler based on libtcc and the Linux kernel's binfmt_misc feature, ccix creates a system with almost no binaries. This results in a distribution that is easier to port across architectures, highly hackable, avoids ABI mismatches, and eliminates the need for complex build systems like Autotools or CMake.
