Transactional Systems in the Fedora Ecosystem

Description:

Transactional systems provide a flexible middle ground between the image-based updates of Fedora Atomics and the traditional read-write filesystems of standard Fedora. By utilizing atomic updates, these systems offer increased stability and the critical ability to roll back snapshots in the event of failure or for troubleshooting. This session explores the fundamental concepts of transactional updates and examines their existing implementation in openSUSE to discuss the requirements for bringing this functionality to Fedora. The presenters will detail how transactional systems function in both read-only contexts—leveraging containers and Flatpaks for workloads—and read-write contexts to ensure more reliable system evolution.
